Krista is an eclectic hobbyist, passionate about yoga, mental health, art, mindfulness, mothering her two (soon to be three) sons, photography, writing, social media and recovery.
She has worked in the mental health system for the past seven 7 years in the capacities of family counsellor, peer worker, street outreach worker, mental health recovery educator, curriculum developer, group facillitator and community organizer. As a consultant, she has developed and delivered mental health recovery training with over 10 mental health organizations in Toronto and has delivered workshops and presentations at several conferences on topics relating to psychosis, families and recovery.
Her continued involvement with the International Network Towards Alternatives and Recovery as both a web developer and coordinating committee member keeps her inspired and connected to continually learning about recovery oriented services and systems around the world.
At 16 she was hospitalized after experiencing mania and psychosis and was told that she would always have to struggle with and take medication for a disorder called “manic depression” (now usually referred to as Bipolar). Against the general messages she received about herself from doctors, society and family she decided to ignore the diagnosis, not believing any of it.
She has lived healthy and medication free life since, finding her own meaning in the experience of psychosis and finding alternative forms of support for maintaining her wellness.
Krista has completed diplomas and certificates from Mohawk College (Social Service Worker Diploma) Humber College (Psychosocial Rehabillitaiton Certificate) and University of Toronto (Solution Focused Counselling Certificate, and Mindfulness Based Groups Certificate). She is also a certified Wellness and Recovery Action Planning facilitator. Recently she was certified as a Yoga Teacher through Yoga Therapy Toronto.
